Detecting morphology changes due to oyster reefs in a tidal basin using Terrestrial Laser Scanning

چکیده
Several programs have been written to process laser scan data from two shoals in the Netherlands. The first makes a grid of heights, the second calculates deformations and makes plots. The third utilises a variogram to obtain information about the amplitude, direction and wavelength of tidal ripples, which are processed and plotted by a fourth program. Six scans have been made in order to compare the elevation of the scanner and the high-speed and longrange settings, from which it is found that the elevation is an important factor: a higher elevation results in a better coverage at midto long-range distances. For flat areas the longrange setting is not useful, as the area scanned increases by a factor two, whilst the scanning time triples. For areas with stark relief however, the long-range setting increases the scanned area with a factor nine. 10/07/14 2 BSc thesis A.H. Visser

Evidence of exceptional oyster‐reef resilience to fluctuations in sea level
Ecosystems at the land-sea interface are vulnerable to rising sea level. Intertidal habitats must maintain their surface elevations with respect to sea level to persist via vertical growth or landward retreat, but projected rates of sea-level rise may exceed the accretion rates of many biogenic habitats. While considerable attention is focused on climate change over centennial timescales, relat...
متن کاملCan habitat restoration be redundant? Response of mobile fishes and crustaceans to oyster reef restoration in marsh tidal creeks
Expectations of ecological and fisheries benefits of habitat restoration are commonly used to justify its high financial cost; however, few empirical studies that rigorously test these expectations exist. Here, we describe the results of a study designed to quantify the effects of restoring oyster reefs in marsh tidal creeks on the mobile macrofauna. We used a before/after control/impact (BACI)...
متن کاملImpacts of Oyster Reef Restoration on Primary Productivity and Nutrient Dynamics in Tidal Creeks of the North Central Gulf of Mexico
The ability of oysters to remove large quantities of particulates from the water column, thereby potentially improving water quality, has been cited as one of the reasons for oyster reef restoration. However, this ability has not yet been effectively demonstrated in the field. As part of the Alabama Oyster Reef Restoration Project, this study was designed to assess impacts of restored eastern o...
متن کاملMonitoring Riverbank Erosion in Mountain Catchments Using Terrestrial Laser Scanning
Sediment yield is a key factor in river basins management due to the various and adverse consequences that erosion and sediment transport in rivers may have on the environment. Although various contributions can be found in the literature about sediment yield modeling and bank erosion monitoring, the link between weather conditions, river flow rate and bank erosion remains scarcely known. Thus,...
متن کاملA novel method for locating the local terrestrial laser scans in a global aerial point cloud
In addition to the heterogeneity of aerial and terrestrial views, the small scale terrestrial point clouds are hardly comparable with large scale and overhead aerial point clouds. A hierarchical method is proposed for automatic locating of terrestrial scans in aerial point cloud. The proposed method begins with detecting the candidate positions for the deployment of the terrestrial laser scanne...
